The texts of Descalça are part of the cycle “Leonorana” (1965-1970) by Ana Hatherly, which consists of 31 variations of Camões’ motto “Descalça goes to the fountain / Leonor pela verdura / Vai formosa e not safe." The piece uses three of these variations, each one looking for Leonor in different ways – using scientific, philosophical or lyrical “explanations” – but without managing to break her intangibility. The videos created for the piece - by Unloop Creative Agency - relate to Ana Hatherly's visual poetry, and the slow, wavy and suspended movement of the music. The staging, by Joana Providência, alludes to the distance of Leonor's figure - partly remembered, partly imagined - and is the connecting thread between the musicians on stage, the music, the text, and the video projection.
