TERRA QUENTE TERRA FRIA
2011
Terra Quente, Terra Fria (Portuguese for 'Hot Land, Cold Land') is a trip to Trás-os-Montes in Portugal through the
work of Graça Morais. A journey that lives off her glimpse,
her memories, the way she feels people, landscapes, sensations and embodies them through her outline and painting.
This choreographic work, directed by Joana Providência,
joins actors and dancers diving deep into the painter's universe and carries the audience into the pulse of life, the rituals and landscapes in her work or, as in the Wonderful World of Torga, into “… a sea of stones of all that's still and mute, a world! A never-ending of rough, uneven and wild land which rises to a momentum of ascending to heaven and sinks in depths of distress, such as telluric contraction for reasons unknown...”
The need to meet these roots led us to a resistance that allowed us to encounter men and women with endless
stories, life outlets still taking place in traditional and "ancient" moulds. Hard lives marked by a huge will to survive and endure the hardships, to bring forward a rough existence ripped from the land. And yet, hilarious humour, delicious irony, explosive bursts of joy from the arid and wild dryness surrounding their lives. From the extensive research improvisation work we developed over months, a lot of material was left behind while relentlessly seeking to embody these people's feelings, emotions and "landscapes". What remained forms a web that rumours and reveals the metamorphoses, the marias, the chosen ones and many others from Graça Morais' universe.
